Nigeria’s first photographer Pa JD Okhai Ojeikere, 83, is dead. The 2011 Chobi Mela VI Lifetime Achievement Awards winner died on February 2 after a brief illness, according to a statement by the family.
The late Pa Ojeikere was the first Nigerian to receive the prestigious award for his outstanding contributions to photography and the development of the society. He got the award for his works, which documented significant moments in Nigerian history with passion and discernment.

The ace photographer focused on the social, political and cultural transformations that occurred during Nigeria’s transition from colonialism to independence.
His Hair Style project, a record of over 1,000 hairstyles, started in 1968 and is invaluable in the study of cultural and ethnographic differences in Africa.
The late Ojeikere’s archives on Nigerian and African culture gave insight into the everyday life and social patterns of the country in the 1960s and allow scholars to make comparisons with today’s development.
The Chobi Mela is an international festival of photography held in Bangladesh and it includes a scholarship given in the name of each recipient to a deserving student to study for a year in Pathshala, The South Asian Media Academy.
