Fans Declare Bob Marly Day As They Celebrate His Birthday

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has declared Feb. 6 Bob Marley Day. It coincides with Marley's birthday. The Jamaican singer, who was born on February 6, 1945, in St. Ann Parish, Jamaica and died in 1981
at age 36 due to malignant melanoma (cancer).

It's perhaps no surprise that Ford is a Marley fan. The mayor was seen in a video posted in December dancing to the song One Love during a council session.

In his official proclamation of Bob Marley Day, Ford said, "We honor the legacy of Robert (Bob) Nesta Marley, an influential musician, advocate for human rights and international ambassador of peace."

Bob Marly helped introduce reggae music to the world and remains one of the genre's most beloved artists to this day.

As a son of a black teenage mother and much older, later absent white father, he spent his early years in St. Ann Parish, in the rural village known as Nine Miles.

In 1963, Marley and his friends formed the Wailing Wailers. The Wailers' big break came in 1972, when they landed a contract with Island Records.

If not for death Bob Marley would have been 69 today.
