Today is Thursday the 337th day of 2013. There are 26 days left in the year. On this day in 1895, African-American mathematician and educator Elbert F. Cox was born. The recipient of a number of educational honors, he was the first Black to earn a Ph.D. in pure mathematics, a field concerned with mathematical theory rather than with practice or application.

Five years ago: Human remains previously found in 1991 are finally identified by Russian and American scientists as those of Tsar Nicholas II. O.J. Simpson, who was acquitted for the well-known double murder in Los Angeles is sentenced for up to thirty-three years in prison for robbing a pair of memorabilia dealers. He will not be eligible for parole for nine years.

One year ago: 8 people are killed and 12 injured by a magnitude 5.6 earthquake in South Korea. World-famous Jazz pianist Dave Brubeck died of heart failure at the age of ninety-one in Connecticut. Brubeck was considered a music legend and was most well-known for his single "Take Five".
