protectorates of Northern and Southern Nigeria established 1901 Nigeria became a British Protectorate. 1913 The Customs Departments of Northern and Southern Nigeria were amalgamated.

1914 Northern and Southern Nigeria united in British colony of Nigeria.

1947 The first pre-independence Constitution, the Richards Constitution became effective on January 1, 1947.
1947 Sonny Okosun, 'Ozziddi'musician, was born at Enugu.

1973 The naira was introduced, replacing the pound at a rate of 2 naira = 1 pound. This made Nigeria the last country to abandon the £sd currency system.

1985 The Nigeria Postal Service Department (NIPOST) came into being with the establishment of the Nigeria Telecommunications Limited (NITEL)
1998 The University of Abuja was established.
