Bloody Clash: Soldiers Take Over Ekiti Parks, Flashpoints

Heavily-armed soldiers on Thursday was deployed in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, following the bloody clash among factional groups of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria on Wednesday night.

The aggrieved faction of the union is demanding the removal of the state Chairman of the union, Mr. Rotimi Olabiwonu,
on the ground that he had already outstayed his tenure in office having spent nine years as chairman instead of eight.

Confusion enveloped major parts of Ado Ekiti on Wednesday night when the enraged drivers engaged themselves in a free-for-all, shooting indiscriminately at one another.

Vehicular and business activities were paralysed with the groups taking over major streets such as Okeyinmi, Ajibade Lane and Oke Ila where they made bonfire and hauled stones and other dangerous weapons at one another.

Many of the commercial drivers sustained injuries from gunshots, stones and machete cuts while several vehicles were vandalised.

Peace was restored to the town on Thursday as stern-looking soldiers were deployed in Okeyinmi, Okesa, and Old Garage area.
