Mikel Obi Relishes His 300th Goal In Chelsea-Derby Game
Mikel Obi, in his 300th game for Chelsea on Sunday scored against Derby County in the third round of the FA Cup. Chelsea won 2-0 at Pride
Park to book a fourth round meeting with Sunderland.
Speaking with his club’s official website, chelseafc.com, on Monday, Mikel, who has now scored four Chelsea goals, said he relishes finding the back of the net on his 300th appearance for the Blues. He added that beyond scoring, he was happier helping the team to successes.
“We played well in the first half but we didn’t get the goal to make the game a bit more easy for us,” Mikel said of the FA Cup 3rd round match.
“We had chances in the first half and if we put them away then it would have been over but we didn’t and we just had to keep going, keep believing and keep playing well and that is what we did in the second half.
“We put Derby under a lot of pressure after half-time and it was important to get the goal. It was a fantastic ball from Willian and I just needed to get my head to it. We then got the second and we could have scored more after that, so we are very pleased with the game,” the Nigerian midfielder said.
“The FA Cup is always big,” the 26-year-old said.
“If we can pick up this trophy it will be very good for us and the manager stressed how important this competition is, but we still want to keep doing well in the Premier League and the Champions League of course.
“We have always had this winning mentality at Chelsea. This manager installed it into this team and now he is back and he has installed it into the new players.”
Mikel scored in the 66th minute with a header from a Willian cross to make it two goals for the season. Oscar added the second in the 71st to make it 2-0.
